Hiroshima Day :: August 6, 2010

Sixty-five years ago, on August 6, 1945, Hiroshima, Japan were completely destroyed by the first atomic bomb dropped in war. Three days later, Nagasaki was also destroyed, which led six days later to the unconditional surrender of Japan to the Allied forces. According to the Wikipedia entry,
Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day. The Hiroshima prefectural health department estimates that, of the people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% from falling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness. . . . In both cities, most of the dead were civilians.
The world has taken several generations to recovery from the horror of those days, and from the international madness of the nuclear arms race. Our work, as one human race, is far from over, not only so that nuclear weapons become a thing of the past, but that the human psyche and soul is re-wired for peace, not conflict.
Los Feliz Art Walk observes Hiroshima Day on the First Friday, August 6, with a local emphasis on the Divine Gift and Spiritual Discipline of Peace.
