Issue No. 3                                                                                       April 2010

The "Imagine Wall" Moves from Barnsdall Municipal Gallery to Courtyard Galleries

LOS ANGELES - The ambitious and exciting "Imagine East Hollywood" project gathers individual responses from a wide range of East Hollywood stakeholders about what they would like to see as the future of East Hollywood. It’s been on display in Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery and now, to facilitate wider participation it’s moving to the Courtyard Galleries, 1733 N. New Hampshire Avenue, Los Angeles CA 90027 (at Hollywood Lutheran Church : enter from parking lot)

Join us for Reception and Participation May 7, 2010 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. or call for an appointment for yourself, your group or school

Help bridge the gap between the neighborhood council and the community it represents. Visit and participate. The responses are collected through a variety of media, including video and audio interviews, essays, poems, stories, illustrations; Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to name a few.

Cindy Marie Jenkins, the Project Director, explains that "We are really trying to reach out to all the different demographics in as many different ways we can. The more we collect, the better."

The graffiti walls show results of the interviews and encouraged people to write/draw their visions, the installation was displayed at the Barnsdall Art Park/Gallery Fluxus exhibit from February through April 18, 2010. The Imagine Walls culminated in an interactive performance which can be viewed on their website.

After April 18, the Imagine Walls will transfer to Courtyard Galleries and the exhibit will expand to include the walls of the actual gallery. Stakeholders can view and interact with the Imagine Walls on weekends or by appointment during the week, and during upcoming Los Feliz Art Walks through the summer.

"We’re excited to bring Imagine East Hollywood here to grow bigger. The Los Feliz Art Walk brings people out to enjoy art and the spirit that thrives in our communities. It straddles the lines between East Hollywood and Griffith Park Neighborhood Councils, between fine art, design and community celebrations of what art expresses — that Imagine East Hollywood celebrates! The irrepressible spirit that is human, not ‘only human’ but fully human. This is wonderful." —Roberta Morris, coordinator of Artwalk, a project of the ACC

"It’s a pleasure to host and welcome the creativity of local artists and visionaries, with the hope that more people in our neighborhood will see this work and interact with it."   — Pastor Dan Hooper, Hollywood Lutheran Church

"Residents are ecstatic about the fact that they’re being asked. When they do bring up issues, they are then asked to help figure out solutions. It’s not venting, it’s trying to figure out how we can solve problems and bring cultural groups together."  —Cindy Marie Jenkins, Imagine East Hollywood Project Director

Jennifer Moran, a board member of the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council, explains how the project helps her to be a better representative.

"I usually only interact with Neighborhood Council people, people involved in committees. These people are off the streets. This provides an opportunity to really listen to people. It seems like an excellent way to make the role of a Neighborhood Council member truly relevant, rather than just being part of a board that doesn’t have a lot of first hand knowledge about what the man or woman on the street thinks."

EHNC President David Bell, has already seen strong excitement generated from volunteers about the project, even in its early stages.

"We are already getting a lot of insight and involvement from the community that we wouldn’t have had. It’s a way to get the people who live in the community involved in creating their own community. Its potential is unlimited."

But that potential depends on how many people actually participate in the project. If you can find a way to participate, you can have a hand in the future of East Hollywood.
